Crusher run settles 10-15% from its loose truck volume during compaction. Base your order on the measured finished depth, since a compacted layer can otherwise end up half an inch short. This calculator has the +10% allowance enabled for that purpose. It may also be called crush and run or 2 inch minus on some tickets. The material is crushed stone containing fines, about 3,000 lb per cubic yard, which compacts into a surface tires are less likely to displace.

Order for finished depth

  1. In feet, measure the pad dimensions or multiply the lane width by its length.
  2. Choose the finished compacted depth: use 4 inches for paths and pavers, 4-6 for driveways, and 6-8 where trucks travel.
  3. Divide cubic feet by 27 to get yards, then x 1.5 to find tons. Keep the +10% selected. Specs apply to the layer once it has been rolled.

Suitable uses and limits

  • Driveway bases need 4-6 inches after compaction, with 2-3 inches of #57 or driveway gravel placed above for the travel surface.
  • Crusher run by itself can form a usable surface for budget-minded rural lanes. Plan for dust in summer and reshaping every 2-4 years.

  • For shed and hot-tub pads, use 4 inches on stripped ground and 6 where the soil is soft.
  • Keep crusher run out of a French drain. Its locking fines retain water, while drainage calls for clean #57 or drain rock.

Example: a 20 x 10 parking pad

For two hundred square feet at 4 inches compacted, 200 x 0.333 = 67 cubic feet = 2.5 cubic yards, or 3.7 tons. With the allowance, order 4 tons. Place and compact half the material, then repeat with the remainder. Two 2-inch lifts can last years longer than a single 4-inch pour, and renting a plate compactor for the afternoon costs less than the first pothole repair.

Delivery details

  • Arrange for the base and surface stone together so the project can keep moving.
  • Start with the pile at the far end of the run, then work back toward it as you spread. For large pads, moving downhill can save a full day.
  • Lightly mist every lift ahead of compaction. Damp crusher run binds more firmly than dry material.
  • Save a wheelbarrow-load for touch-ups. It is also used by road crews for pothole patching, and repairs may be needed later.

What amount of crusher run is required for a driveway?
Calculate lane area by the compacted depth of 4-6 inches, convert using 1.5 tons per yard, then add 10%. For a 50 x 10 ft lane at 4 inches, the estimate is about 10 tons.
What is the weight of a yard of crusher run?
A cubic yard weighs about 3,000 lb, or 1.5 tons, with a little added weight after rain. Fines fill the gaps between the stones, accounting for the added weight compared with clean gravel.
How do crusher run and gravel differ?
Crusher run retains stone dust, unlike screened-clean gravel products such as #57. The dust produces a compacting base, while clean stone remains loose for surface layers and drainage. For a driveway, install them in that order.
Are crush and run and crusher run identical?
The names vary by region, but the material is the same family. Crusher run and 2 inch minus describe the same blend, so either name identifies that material.
Can crusher run serve as a finished surface?
For rural, lightly used drives, it can. It forms a firm crust but creates dust during dry periods and requires regrading every few years. A later 2 inches of #57 addresses both.
How much will crusher run shrink during compaction?
It compacts by ten to fifteen percent. A loose 4-inch layer rolls down to about 3.5 inches. That is why the calculator begins with an allowance and why specifications state compacted depth.
