Do not use Top Soil to correct a slumping loess slope or to hold loose Sandhills ground in place. Eastern Nebraska soils can retain moisture and shift when saturated, while the Sandhills shed water quickly. Along the Platte River, gravelly ground may need a stable landscape plan before the final growing surface is placed. Top Soil is for areas intended to grow, including new lawns, gardens, and flower beds, not feedlot pads or access lanes.
The material is screened for a smooth, workable finish that can be spread across a planned landscape area. Set the drainage route and rough grade before bringing in the final soil layer, especially where wind or runoff can disturb exposed surfaces. That order matters around the Loess Hills as much as it does near the Platte. For sod work, make the lawn area even and ready for its final contour before placing Top Soil as the planting surface.

Culvert scar finally blended into the lawn
